Traveling to Bhutan

Planning to visit Bhutan? The Kingdom of Bhutan maintains a carefully managed tourism policy known as “High Value, Low Impact Tourism” to protect its culture and environment. To enter Bhutan, all international tourists (except from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) must obtain a visa prior to arrival through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or an international travel partner.

This system ensures that every visitor enjoys a smooth, safe, and authentic travel experience while contributing to Bhutan’s sustainable development.

Visa Requirements for Bhutan

  • All foreign nationals (except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) need a visa to enter Bhutan.
  • The visa must be arranged before arrival through an authorized Bhutan tour operator.
  • Independent travel is not permitted — all visitors must book a pre-arranged tour package that includes accommodation, transport, a licensed guide, and meals.
  • Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals do not need a visa but must carry a valid passport or voter ID and obtain a permit on arrival.

How to Apply for a Bhutan Visa

  1. Book a Bhutan Tour Package through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
  2. Submit a copy of your passport (minimum 6 months validity).
  3. Pay the full tour cost, which includes the visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).
  4. The tour operator applies for your visa on your behalf to the Department of Immigration, Royal Government of Bhutan.
  5. Once approved, a Visa Clearance Letter will be issued.
  6. Present this letter upon arrival at Paro International Airport or any designated land border, where the visa will be stamped in your passport.

Bhutan Visa Fees and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Every international traveler is required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) as part of Bhutan’s responsible tourism policy.

As of the latest update:

  • SDF for International Tourists: USD 100 per person per night
  • Visa Fee: USD 40 per person (one-time)

The SDF directly supports Bhutan’s free education, healthcare, environmental protection, and infrastructure development — ensuring that your visit contributes to the happiness and well-being of the Bhutanese people.

Visa Processing Time

  • Visa applications are typically processed within 3–5 working days after submission and payment.
  • It is recommended to apply at least 2–3 weeks before your planned travel date to ensure smooth processing.

Travel Entry Points

Most visitors arrive via:

  • Paro International Airport (the only international airport in Bhutan)
  • Land entry from India through:
    • Phuentsholing (southern Bhutan)
    • Gelephu
    • Samdrup Jongkhar

Important Notes

  • Your tour operator handles the entire visa process, so you don’t need to apply directly.
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
  • Carry both a printed and digital copy of your visa clearance letter.
  • Travel without a licensed guide or confirmed itinerary is not permitted in Bhutan.
